How to Install a Shelf in Your Home

Shelf
Shelf brackets or mounting hardware.

Steps
Choose a Location for the Shelf
Think about where you need extra storage or display space and mark the spot on the wall.
Find the Studs
Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the wall. Shelves should be anchored into studs for support. If there are no studs, use wall anchors or toggle bolts.
Mark the Placement
Measure and mark where the brackets or mounting hardware will go. Ensure they are level, as you don’t want a crooked shelf.
Drill Pilot Holes
Drill small pilot holes into the marked spots, being careful to drill into the studs or anchors.
Install the Brackets
Attach the brackets to the wall using screws. If using wall anchors, follow the instructions on the packaging.
Place the Shelf
Once the brackets are secured, place the shelf on top. Use screws to secure the shelf to the brackets.
Check for Levelness
Before fully tightening the screws, double-check that the shelf is level.
